CORRELATION BETWEEN THE WRITTEN ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
AND THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF FRESHMAN TEACHER
EDUCATION STUDENTS OF MOUNTAIN PROVINCE STATE
POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE-TADIAN CAMPUS
(Hilary L. Tican, Sandra B. Aguirre, Jacqueline M. Gumangan)

Abstract

The study attempted to determine the correlation between the written English proficiency of freshman Teacher Education students of MPSPC-Tadian Campus and their academic performance for AY 2009-2010. It made use of descriptive survey method of research with English survey test as the main instrument.

Findings showed that the respondents exhibited good proficiency in the aspects of grammar, capitalization, punctuation and spelling. On the other hand, they had fair proficiency in the aspects of sentence structure and vocabulary. Overall, the respondents had good proficiency in written English. The aspect of vocabulary differed significantly from the aspects of grammar, capitalization, punctuation and spelling but did not differ significantly from the sentence structure aspect. The academic performance of the respondents for AY 2009-2010 was in the level of good. Finally, the study found out that there was a low relationship between the written English proficiency of the respondents and their academic performance for AY 2009-2010.

The following recommendations are hereby offered: English teachers should give emphasis on sentence structure and vocabulary with appropriate strategies and interesting activities; the academic performance of the respondents, although rated as good, leaves much room for improvement, hence action researches for this purpose need to be conducted; students should continuously endeavor to take interest in improving their English knowledge and skills; and, a follow-up study should be conducted for the same group of respondents to ascertain their progress and give corresponding remedies.
