MUSIC PREFERENCES OF TEACHER EDUCATION STUDENTS OF MOUNTAIN PROVINCE STATE POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE, TADIAN CAMPUS

Abstracts
The study aimed to find out the music preferences of freshman teacher education students of Mountain Province State Polytechnic College, Tadian Campus, the factors that influence them in their music preferences, and the effect of music on their lives. It made use of a survey-questionnaire as the primary data gathering instrument, with 74 freshman teacher education students as respondents.
The study found out that religious or sacred music and Cordillera music are the most preferred types of music, closely followed by country music and popular music. Rap and jazz are the least preferred.
Media/information technology, other factors (cultural/ethnic, tradition, personal taste), and religion have the foremost influence on studentsβ music preferences. The other three factors, namely (school, community, and family and relatives) have moderate influence. Among all the specific indicators under the six factors, the freshman teacher education students identified cell phones, TV/MTV, and personal tastes as having the most influence on them in choosing their type of music.
Music has great effect on the personal, academic and social lives of the freshman teacher education students. Among all the specific indicators under the three aspects, music being able to help in expressing emotional feelings was perceived by the respondents as having the most effect.
