Development and Validation of Vocabulary Worksheets in Teaching Philippine Literature
Karyl A. Po-or

ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this study was to develop vocabulary worksheets in teaching Philippine Literature. Specifically, it included the various learning activities that could be developed from selected Philippine literary pieces, the validity, and the reliability of the vocabulary worksheets. Developmental research was used in the study.

A compilation of 12 selected literary pieces was the springboard for the reading texts from which vocabulary was drawn. An evaluation form lifted from the work of Mendoza (2010) served as the evaluators’ basis in judging the instructional material’s validity and reliability in terms of content and instructional characteristics.

Six evaluators comprised of 4 MPSPC instructors and two external validators, the Education Program Supervisor for English, DepEd, Mountain Province Division and a teacher from Saint Vincent’s High School evaluated the vocabulary worksheets as to its validity; and as to its reliability, thirty (30) students joined the evaluators in rating the material’s content. They considered the developed vocabulary worksheets as very much valid and very much reliable.

Findings of the study reveal that the selected Philippine literary texts serve as rich source of vocabulary which is a basis for developing contextual and sound word associations for the students’ vocabulary enrichment. Using an array of word learning techniques such as assessment tests and enhancement activities provide increased exposure to the vocabulary. Moreover, vocabulary development strategies draw on multiple repetitions of the vocabulary’s content to promote internalization of vocabulary concepts. As a whole, the package is perceived as a useful reference in promoting students’ vocabulary development.
