Three student journalists from Mountain Province State Polytechnic College were able to bring home awards from the recent 17th Luzonwide Higher Education Press Conference (LHEPC) last February 28 to March 2 held at Hotel Supreme, Baguio City.
Marcial Pineda III, 5th year Accountancy, garnered 5th place in Photojournalism English, Henry Coyupan, 3rd year Forestry, got 7th place in Development Communication Writing Filipino, Warden Taltala, 4th year Teacher Education, bagged 8th place in Opinion Writing English.
Joining forces in eliminating fake news with the theme: # No Filter: Averting False MediaThrough Ethical Journalism, 12 students from MPSPC, nine from Bontoc Campus and three from Tadian Campus, represented the college and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) in the said event.
Seven regions participated in the event namely; Region 1 (Ilocos), Region 2 (Cagayan Valley), Region 3 (Central Luzon), Region 4-A (CALABARZON), Region 4-B (MIMAROPA), CAR, and some delegates from Region 7 (Cebu City).
The confab was composed of 12 contested events namely; News Writing, Feature Writing, Opinion Writing, Editorial Writing, Development Communication Writing, Poetry Writing, Sports Writing, Copyreading and Headline Writing, Editorial Cartooning, Literary Graphics and Illustrations, Cartoon Strips Drawing and Layouting and Page Design.
Media Practitioners in the area of journalism were invited to lecture and judge the contested events. Dr. Joselito D. Delos Reyes, a UST professor, lectured on Feature and Poetry Writing. Joel P. Salud, a writer in The Manila and The Manila Times lectured on Editorial Writing and Opinion Writing. Dr. Jimmy B. Fong, a professor in the University of the Philippines Baguio also lectured in Development Communication. Dr. Purita S. Licas, an Information Officer V of Region 2 lectured on Copy Reading and Headline Writing. Dr. Regidor Gamboa Gaboy, Dean College of Education of Central Luzon State University lectured on Comic Strip Drawing and Layouting. Alfred Dizon, Editor-in-chief of Northern Philippine Herald lectured on News Writing and Sports Writing. /Tala News Corps
