‘Learning by experience is the best teacher’ – Tangilag

The Cordillera Chamber Singers (CSS) flaunted their singing prowess in an astounding musical performance that earned the nod of the judges and resulted in their bringing home two gold medals from the two competition categories during the Penabur International Choir Festival (PICF) held in Jakarta, Indonesia last September 3-7, 2019.

A faculty member of the College, and the current Choir Master of the MPSPC Minstrels, Mr. Santino Tangilag is a member of this choral group, and he was part of the Philippine delegation and had the opportunity to perform with the other members during the said competition.

The CSS emerged as Champion in the Folklore Category, earning for themselves one gold medal, and also as Champion in the Mixed Chamber Category for another gold medal. Seemingly undaunted by the imminent atmosphere of competition,  the CCS performed with their best foot forward which also enabled them to grab a spot in the competition of 11 choral groups, particularly in the battle of the champions, the Grand Prix Round.

In an interview with Mr. Santino Tangilag, he said, “Learning by experience is the best teacher. It is not enough that we just take videos, record the performance, or even watch it in YouTube. In every involvement there is always a lot of ideas and knowledge that we gain.”

When asked how the said event can contribute to MPSPC, Tangilag shared, “Joining the event widened and enlightened my horizon as an educator. My participation in this event can benefit the institution, especially our students because it inspires and motivates them to do their best in the performing arts, so that they could avail of the same situation in the future, knowing that the present generation of students is the hope of the nation.”

Held once in two years, the PICF competition was participated by 152 different choir groups and with over 3,000 individuals from around the world, highlighting the growing phenomenon with the hope to foster and enrich both traditional and contemporary music to the international community.
