Forty five teaching and non-teaching personnel of the Mountain Province State Polytechnic College attended the Basic First Aid and Emergency Response Training conducted at the College Auditorium, Bontoc, Mountain Province on July 17-19, 2019.
The 3-day training was coordinated by the Sports and Athletics Unit under the Office of the Student Affairs which aimed to provide a basic training on life support among coaches and office front liners who may deal with emergency situations of students. The training was facilitated by 10 well-trained Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management (PDRRM) responders through lectures, demonstrations and skills assessment.
A diagnostic examination was administered by the facilitators to all the participants upon registration. To commence the series of activities for the said training, the facilitators discussed the objectives of the activities and the expectations from the participants. Following this, the resource persons presented the types of bandages, uses of each bandage and the principles to remember in using bandages. In order to provide the participants an opportunity to undergo first-hand demonstration activities, the facilitators assigned them to their respective groups. Specifically, the participants underwent return demonstration on bandaging using cravat, bandaging using the elastic bandages, splinting to immobilize injured body part, and extricating an injured person with packaging. In addition, the participants were also required to execute high-quality CPR for 5 cycles (adult), high-quality CPR (infant), Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) on adult, and FBAO on infant.
During the assessment, the participants were asked to answer a post-test before they were stationed to their respective groups. The individual assessment centered on the delivery of skills in a given scenario and the adherence to the principles applicable in FBAO (adult and infant) and high-quality CPR (adult and infant).
The final assessment to complete the training involved a component in which each of the four groups of participants needed to locate their assigned victim at the accident scene that was set-up for the activity. Each member was assigned a task; but as a group they were expected to apply safety measures, treat injuries that need urgent attention, evacuate the victim to a safe location, package the victim to the spine board and bring them to the assigned area for advanced treatment. During accounting of personnel, some responders were left at the accident scene and each group realized that they need to conduct a search and rescue for the missing member to complete the group evaluation.
