The DOST Balik Scientist Program has recognized Dr. Guillermo A. Mendoza, a DOST-PCAARRD Balik Scientist, and his host institution, the Mountain Province State Polytechnic College, at the BSP Annual Convention held today at the Quest Plus Conference Center in Clark, Pampanga. MPSPC President Edgar G. Cue received the certificate of appreciation for MPSPC. He was accompanied by RDU Director Ms. Luzlyn Agwilang.
 
Dr. Mendoza, a Professor Emeritus from the University of Illinois specializing in Forestry and GIS, was acknowledged for his valuable contribution in enhancing the science, technology, and innovation capabilities of the country. It is worth mentioning that Dr. Mendoza concluded his engagement with MPSPC from February to July 2023, during which he conducted a series of capacity-building activities on GIS and geospatial technologies for the DAF faculty. Additionally, Dr. Mendoza provided assistance to MPSPC researchers in developing project proposals for submission and funding by DOST. Although currently back in the US, Dr. Mendoza participated in the convention online, showcasing a poster presentation highlighting his involvement with MPSPC this year. The Balik Scientist engagement was facilitated by the Research and Development Unit of the College.
 
President Cue also participated in the panel discussion on Climate Smart Agriculture for Food Security, representing the education sector and leveraging his expertise in tourism and hospitality management. During the discussion, President Cue expressed his enthusiasm for the growing trend of agritourism in the Philippines, particularly in Mountain Province. Agritourism has emerged as an effective platform for educating the public about Climate Smart Agriculture.
 
Overall, the recognition of Dr. Mendoza and MPSPC's involvement in the DOST Balik Scientist Program underscores the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange in advancing scientific research and technological innovation in the country. Through their efforts, the science and technology landscape in the country is being strengthened, paving the way for sustainable development and economic growth.
