The College’s School of Healthcare Education (SHE) celebrated the transition of 243 sophomores into the beginning of their socialization in the nursing profession during the 17th Capping, Pinning, and Candle-Lighting Ceremony held at the College Auditorium, today, May 30, 2024.
Bearing the theme, “Cultivating Excellence, Equity and Diversity in Nursing Education: Towards Resilient, Globally Competent Health Workforce," the Former Undersecretary to the Department of Health, Hon. Roger P. Tong-an, DMPA, MAN, RN served as the guest speaker.
More than an annual tradition, the capping, pinning, and candle-lighting ceremony is a symbol of the student nurses’ dedication and hard work. The cap represents responsibility while the lamp means light to guide the path of nursing practice. The lamp is also a popular symbol of the nursing profession, tracing its roots from Florence Nightingale, who tended to soldiers in the Crimean War in the 1800s. She was known as “The Lady with the Lamp” and is considered the founder of modern nursing.
Prior to the ceremony, a mass was celebrated by the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Philippines.
Adding to the words of inspiration and wisdom given by the Guest Speaker were Cong. Maximo Y. Dalog, Jr., College President Dr. Edgar G. Cue, VP for Academic Affairs Dr. Mark Preston S. Lopez, Campus Director Dr. Arel B. Sia-ed, and the Dean for SHE Mr. Alfred O. Fomocao, Jr. Also witnessing the ceremony were CAO Mr. Dexter Lingbanan, Bontoc, SSDO Dean Ms. Jenifer Ruth C. Tuazon, other College officials, parents/guardians, and College personnel.
